Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the adverse events following group influenza A (H1N1) vaccination at the schools and to evaluate the characteristics.
Methods: From November 11, 2009 to December 7, 2009, group influenza A (H1N1) vaccination was done at the Elementary, Middle, High, and Specialized schools in Seo District, Gwangju. The frequency and severity of adverse events following vaccination were examined.
Results: A total of 39,734 students at the schools were vaccinated, and 434 (1.1%) students reported adverse events. Female students (272, 1.5%) had more adverse events than male students (162, 0.7%). Common clinical manifestations of adverse events were nausea (178, 41.0%), headache (122, 28.1%), and dizziness (115, 26.4%). And there was no severe adverse events reported. Most of adverse events occurred within 30 minutes following vaccination. In contrast to group vaccination at the schools, there was no reported adverse events of vaccinated students (1,195), who visited the health center with their parent on a scheduled manner.
Conclusion: There were a few mild to moderate adverse events following group influenza A (H1N1) vaccination at the Elementary, Middle, High, and Specialized schools. These results suggest that the influenza vaccination is safer in real world than expected.
